Set the oven to 350°F (175°C) to preheat.

Lightly grease a baking dish with butter or cooking spray.

Core each apple, preserving the bottom, then slice wedges about three-quarters of the way down.

Place the sliced apples evenly in the prepared baking dish.

In a small bowl, combine melted butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, chopped nuts, raisins or dried cranberries, and lemon juice.

Spoon the mixture generously between the apple slices.

Add a splash of water to the bottom of the dish, cover with aluminum foil, and bake for 25 minutes.

Remove the foil and continue baking for an additional 15 minutes until the apples are tender.

Allow to cool slightly before serving with optional ice cream or whipped cream.
